Chapter Twelve: The Ceremony
Without warning, every angel in the chamber fell upon their faces.
Michael.
The mighty host.
The seven newly awakened spirits.
Every knee bowed.
Every head lowered.
The Almighty had come.
His glory filled the chamber beyond description. No created being dared lift their eyes. Heaven itself seemed to stand in reverent silence before its Creator.
Then He spoke.
No language could fully describe His voice.
Thunder was merely its echo.
It was the voice that had once commanded light to shine from darkness, the voice that had called galaxies into existence, the voice before which every power in Heaven willingly bowed.
"My beloved children..."
"You now understand."
The seven trembled before Him.
Daniel spoke first, his forehead still resting upon the crystal floor.
"We do, Lord."
"We judged mankind."
Rachel wept openly.
"We believed obedience was easy."
Tom's voice was scarcely more than a whisper.
"We knew nothing."
The Almighty replied,
"You have now learned mercy."
"You have learned compassion."
"You have learned that mankind walks by faith..."
"...not by sight."
At that very moment, the chamber around them vanished.
The crystal floor.
The Living Canopies.
The gardens.
The rivers of light.
All disappeared.
The seven found themselves standing within another realm of Heaven.
It resembled the greatest royal assembly imaginable.
Its vastness stretched beyond sight.
Thousands upon thousands of angels filled every horizon, standing in perfect order before the Throne.
Some possessed two wings.
Others four.
Others six.
Some shone like burnished gold.
Others blazed with living fire.
Some radiated a brilliance brighter than the stars themselves.
Every order of Heaven had gathered.
Their worship rolled across eternity like mighty oceans of praise.
Then the Almighty called them by name.
"Daniel."
"Rachel."
"Tom."
"Bobby."
"Tim."
"Sidney."
"Cathy."
"Arise."
Together they stood.
A magnificent angel stepped forward from among the heavenly host.
His voice sounded like a great trumpet announcing the decree of a king.
"By the authority of the Almighty..."
"...new names are bestowed."
He turned towards Daniel.
"Daniel..."
"...shall now be known as Archdan."
Then Rachel.
"Rachel..."
"...Archrac."
"Tom..."
"...Archto."
"Bobby..."
"...Archbo."
"Tim..."
"...ArchTi."
"Sidney..."
"...Archsi."
"Cathy..."
"...Archca."
As each new name echoed throughout Heaven, countless angels bowed their heads in solemn recognition.
Another mighty angel stepped forward.
His voice rolled through the assembly like a great bronze trumpet.
"Do you accept these names..."
"...and your commission as Guardian Angels to the very people whose lives prepared you for this calling?"
The seven looked towards the Throne.
Every fear disappeared.
Every doubt melted away.
The love flowing from the presence of the Almighty overwhelmed every part of their being.
Together they answered with one voice.
"We do."
"We gladly do."
Instantly their garments were transformed.
The simple robes of white vanished.
Golden armour clothed them from head to foot, gleaming with the reflected glory of Heaven.
Swords appeared at their sides.
Great wings unfolded behind them.
Power unlike anything they had ever known surged through their beings—not the power of pride, but the strength that comes only from serving the King of Heaven.
They had become guardian angels.
Not because they had proved themselves stronger than mankind...
but because they had first learned humility.
Then the Almighty spoke once more.
"The hour of your first assignment has come."
Before each newly appointed guardian appeared the image of a single human face.
Daniel.
Rachel.
Tom.
Bobby.
Tim.
Sidney.
Cathy.
The real men and women.
Still living.
Still walking upon the Earth.
Still completely unaware that Heaven had just appointed eternal guardians to stand beside them.
Then another image appeared before the entire assembly.
An aircraft.
Airbus 0718.
Departure: July 15th.
Destination: California.
A hush fell across the hosts of Heaven.
Michael stepped forward.
With a single motion, he drew his sword.
Its blade shone like living light.
"The enemy moves."
The seven looked towards the Earth below.
For the first time...
they would not merely observe humanity.
They would walk beside it.
They would defend it.
They would stand unseen between darkness and those entrusted to their care.
And so began the true purpose for which they had been created before the foundations of the world.
