Chapter Six: The Watchers.

Years passed.
To mankind...
they came and went like every other year.
Children became adults.
Dreams were born.
Others quietly died.
Some discovered purpose.
Many lost their way.
Yet to the seven...
life simply continued.
None remembered Heaven.
None remembered the Throne.
None remembered standing before the Almighty.
Each believed their earthly life had always been their own.
Their parents.
Their memories.
Their fears.
Their ambitions.
Their future.
The lesson had begun exactly as God intended.
Only Heaven knew otherwise.
High above the Earth...
Michael stood overlooking the nations.
Beside him waited thousands upon thousands of faithful angels, their shining armour reflecting Heaven's everlasting light.
One younger angel stepped forward.
"My lord..."
"They have forgotten."
Michael nodded.
"They were always meant to."
"They believe themselves to be the people whose lives they now live."
"They will remember only when the appointed hour arrives."
The angel looked down upon the Earth.
"They seem so... fragile."
Michael's eyes remained fixed upon the world below.
"They now understand what every son and daughter of Adam has always faced."
"They know joy."
"They know sorrow."
"They know temptation."
"They know faith."
"And now..."
"They must choose."
Throughout the Earth...
the seven were quietly watched over by Heaven.
Heaven's eyes never left Daniel.
Nor Tim.
Nor Bobby...
Rachel...
Cathy...
Sidney...
or Tom.
The heavenly host remained unseen.
Their watch was constant.
They waited.
Not until Heaven commanded would they intervene.
Far beneath the Earth...
another council gathered.
The frog-eyed demons assembled before the floating black triangle.
Its surface had grown darker with every passing year.
It seemed to absorb light itself.
One demon bowed.
"My lord..."
"Our search continues."
Satan slowly circled the strange stone.
"They are here."
"I know it."
"The Almighty has hidden seven among mankind."
"They walk somewhere beneath the same skies."
"They breathe the same air."
"We need to locate them."

His eyes narrowed.

"No veil remains forever."
Another demon stepped forward.
"Our observers continue studying humanity."
"We watch governments."
"We watch churches."
"We watch universities."
"We watch armies."
"We watch the proud..."
"...and the broken."
"We search every nation."
"We wait for Heaven's hidden servants to reveal themselves."
Satan smiled coldly.
"They will."
"Every heart eventually exposes itself."
The years quietly continued.
Daniel excelled at school.
Teachers admired his remarkable intelligence.
His parents proudly watched him mature into a confident young man.
Tim developed an endless curiosity.
Nothing escaped his questioning mind.
Bobby worked evenings helping support his struggling family.
He never complained.
Rachel faithfully attended church with her parents.
Her Bible became worn from constant reading.
Cathy spent countless nights studying distant galaxies through her telescope.
Sidney uploaded his very first online video.
Only twelve people watched it.
He celebrated anyway.
Tom...
learned something very different.
His parents loved him deeply.
There was never any doubt about that.
Yet praise always seemed to follow achievement.
The highest grades.
The finest schools.
Winning.
Success.
Failure became the one thing he feared most.
Deep within the kingdom of darkness...
the council continued.
One frog-eyed demon cautiously asked,
"My lord..."
"When shall we reveal ourselves?"
Satan rested one hand upon the black triangle.
"Not yet."
"Humanity still fears the unknown."
"They must first long for it."
Another demon smiled.
"Our whispers bear fruit."
"More sightings are reported every year."
"Governments investigate them."
"Scientists debate them."
"Millions now believe intelligent life must exist."
"Excellent."
Satan's eyes gleamed.
"For generations, mankind has asked..."
'Are we alone?'
He slowly smiled.
"Soon..."
"...we shall answer."
"They will believe we crossed unimaginable distances to help them."
He shook his head.
"No."
"They will believe..."
"...we created them."
The chamber erupted with sinister laughter.
"Our greatest victory..."
"...will not be that mankind fears us."
"It will be that they trust us."
Far above...
Michael quietly watched.
Nothing whispered in darkness escaped Heaven.
Nothing planned by Satan surprised the Almighty.
The faithful angels remained at their appointed places.
Watching.
Waiting.
For the day when darkness would finally discover...
whom God had hidden.
