Chapter Seven: The Search Ends.
Seventeen years passed.
For almost two decades...
the kingdom of darkness searched relentlessly.
Not for ordinary people.
But for God's hidden seven
Satan knew they existed.
The Almighty Himself had spoken of them.
Yet their identities remained concealed beneath ordinary human lives.
Eight billion people walked the Earth.
Somewhere among them...
were seven souls Heaven guarded with extraordinary care.
The mystery consumed him.
He hated mysteries.
Especially those belonging to God.
Deep beneath the Earth...
inside one of his ancient palaces...
Satan prowled slowly around his throne.
The floating black triangle had grown larger still.
Its polished surface pulsed like a living heartbeat.
Countless fallen spirits entered its darkness...
only to emerge again moments later...
as though rehearsing for a role not yet revealed.
The frog-eyed searchers stood motionless around it.
Watching.
Waiting.
Listening.
Then, the great doors burst open.
A demon threw himself upon the black floor.
"My lord!"
Satan stopped.
"What have you found?"
The creature struggled to speak through excitement.
"The veil..."
"It has weakened."
"We have identified one."
Silence swept through the chamber.
The serpent smiled.
"Show me."
Dark mist gathered before the throne.
Within it appeared a young businessman leaving a city office.
Confident.
Successful.
Determined.
Daniel.
Satan studied him carefully.
Then smiled.
"So..."
"There you are."
The demon grinned.
"The Almighty's protection revealed him."
Satan nodded.
"Every intervention leaves a footprint."
He slowly turned.
"Kill him."
Only two days later, Daniel drove home after working late.
Rain hammered against the windscreen.
The narrow country road was almost deserted.
High above...
two mighty angels watched silently.
Far behind Daniel's vehicle...
a lorry accelerated.
Its driver no longer controlled the steering wheel.
A demon twisted the wheel with unnatural strength.
The enormous vehicle crossed into Daniel's lane.
Head-on.
The impact would kill him instantly.
The demon laughed.
Then
A brilliant flash.
One of God's angels simply stretched out his hand.
The lorry struck what appeared to be empty air.
Instead...
it slammed into an invisible force.
The vehicle spun violently away, crashing harmlessly into a field.
Daniel braked suddenly.
Heart racing.
He stepped from his car.
"That... should have hit me."
He looked around.
No explanation.
Only silence.
The angel quietly returned to his place beside the road.
Far below...
Satan's smile vanished.
"My lord..."
"The Almighty intervened."
Satan hissed.
"Find another."
Weeks later…
Another report arrived.
"My lord."
"We've found the girl."
Rachel.
She was returning home after leading a Bible study at her local church.
A drunken driver sped towards a pedestrian crossing.
Rachel never saw him.
Neither did anyone else notice the demon forcing the man's foot harder upon the accelerator.
The car screamed forward.
Seconds remained.
Then...
without warning...
the driver sneezed violently.
His foot slipped from the accelerator.
The vehicle narrowly missed Rachel by inches.
She stood frozen.
One elderly woman rushed over.
"God was watching over you."
Rachel smiled politely.
"I think He was."
Invisible beside her...
two angels quietly smiled.
Satan crushed the arm of his throne.
Again...
failure.
Bobby, worked evenings unloading deliveries at a warehouse.
One night...
a towering stack of steel beams suddenly collapsed.
Workers shouted.
There was nowhere to run.
One beam hurtled directly towards Bobby's head.
Without anyone noticing...
an unseen angel simply caught it.
For one impossible second...
the steel hung motionless in the air.
Long enough.
Bobby stepped backwards.
The beam crashed harmlessly onto the concrete.
Everyone stared.
The foreman shook his head.
"I've never seen anything like that."
Neither had Bobby.
Tim, travelled constantly investigating stories.
While covering political unrest overseas, armed men opened fire upon the convoy.
Bullets shattered windows.
One round flew directly towards Tim's chest.
An angel turned it aside.
The bullet buried itself harmlessly into the vehicle door.
Tim later stared at the hole.
"It should have hit me."
He never knew why it hadn't.
Cathy, during an isolated mountain expedition searching for reported UFO activity, Cathy slipped from a rocky ledge.
She fell.
Straight towards jagged rocks.
A sudden gust of wind, though no wind had been forecast, caught her body just enough to throw her onto a narrow ledge below.
Bruised.
Shaken.
Alive.
She looked upward.
"I was lucky."
Invisible nearby...
two angels exchanged knowing smiles.
…Sidney's growing online fame brought invitations to dangerous publicity stunts.
One producer suggested filming atop an abandoned skyscraper.
A loose steel platform suddenly gave way beneath him.
As Sidney fell...
his jacket caught upon a railing that should never have supported his weight.
He dangled only metres above safety until rescuers reached him.
Millions later watched the dramatic footage.
None saw the angel standing upon the broken platform.
Finding Tom proved easiest.
Protecting him proved hardest.
The criminal world surrounded him daily.
One evening a drug deal collapsed.
Guns appeared.
Arguments erupted.
One terrified teenager pulled the trigger.
The bullet sped directly towards Tom.
Time itself seemed to slow.
An angel stepped between them.
The bullet flattened against unseen armour before dropping harmlessly to the floor.
Everyone froze.
No one understood why Tom remained standing.
Neither did Tom.
Far beneath the Earth...
another meeting was called.
The frog-eyed watchers stood silently before Satan.
Every attempt...
had failed.
Seven targets.
Seven failures.
One nervous demon finally spoke.
"My lord..."
"The Almighty's angels guard them continually."
Satan remained silent.
His cold eyes narrowed.
Finally...
he smiled.
A smile far more terrifying than his anger.
"Then we stop trying to kill them."
The demons looked confused.
"If Heaven refuses to let them die..."
"...then we'll make them wish they had."
He slowly walked towards the floating black triangle.
"We don't need their bodies."
"We need their allegiance."
His hand rested upon the dark stone.
"Break their hearts."
"Feed their pride."
"Reward their sin."
"Twist their desires."
"Turn their wounds into chains."
He looked back at his assembled demons.
"If I cannot destroy God's seven..."
"I shall own them."
The frog-eyed watchers bowed low.
One by one, they vanished into the darkness to begin a far more dangerous mission.
Not murder.
Corruption.
And high above the Earth...
the angels of God quietly took their places once more.
For the greatest battle was no longer over the seven's lives.
It would now be fought for their souls.
