Chapter One: The Great Boast

Far above the heavens visible to mankind...
Beyond every star...
Beyond every galaxy...
Beyond the reach of time itself...
stood the everlasting Kingdom of God.
No language ever spoken by men could truly describe it.
It was beauty without comparison.
Life without death.
Peace without fear.
A place where love itself seemed woven into the very air.
Countless spirit-beings lived there, each created by the Almighty with purpose, intelligence and unimaginable splendour. Some served before the Throne. Others journeyed throughout the immeasurable reaches of Heaven carrying out the will of God. Mighty angels, radiant beyond description, worshipped continually, while innumerable hosts filled the heavenly Kingdom with joyful praise.
At the very centre of everything stood the Throne.
The Throne above all thrones.
From it flowed the glory of the Almighty God.
His presence was life.
His wisdom beyond measure.
His justice perfect.
His mercy without end.
Everything that existed found its purpose in Him.
Yet while Heaven rejoiced...
far below...
the Earth already turned beneath the sun.
Mountains rose from its surface.
Oceans crashed against distant shores.
Cities bustled with life.
Children laughed.
Old men breathed their last.
Kings ruled.
Wars were fought.
Families gathered.
Others were torn apart.
Generation after generation lived their brief lives, knowing little of the unseen battle surrounding them.
Many worshipped God.
Many ignored Him.
Many denied He even existed.
Yet every human life remained precious to the One who had formed them.
Watching over mankind from Heaven were countless angels, sent according to God's perfect will.
Among the younger spirit-beings were seven close companions.
Daniel, Tim, Bobby, Rachel, Cathy, Sidney and Tom.
Unlike the mighty archangels, they had not yet received their earthly assignments. Their time of preparation continued beneath Heaven's everlasting peace.
They had never known pain.
Never experienced hunger.
Never buried someone they loved.
Never doubted the goodness of God.
How could they?
His glory surrounded them every moment of their existence.
One day, the seven stood together overlooking one of Heaven's crystal valleys.
Far below, the Earth could be seen, suspended in the darkness of space like a brilliant sapphire beneath the hand of its Creator.
Sidney watched mankind with fascination.
"They never stop moving."
Tim smiled.
"They're always building something."
Rachel's eyes followed a small family walking together through a country village.
"I wonder what they're like."
"They're loved," Daniel answered quietly.
"They must be," Bobby agreed. "The Almighty watches over them continually."
Tom folded his arms.
"I still don't understand."
The others looked towards him.
"If they know the Almighty exists..."
"Why do so many turn away from Him?"
No one answered immediately.
Far below, another nation erupted into war.
Elsewhere, a mother knelt beside the bed of her dying child.
A wealthy businessman celebrated another fortune while never once thanking the God who had given him breath.
A lonely prisoner cried out for mercy.
All of it unfolded beneath Heaven's watchful gaze.
Cathy finally spoke.
"Perhaps they simply forget."
Tom slowly shook his head.
"If I had ever stood in His presence..."
"...I could never forget."
Neither could the others.
Tim nodded confidently.
"No matter what happened to me..."
"...I would always remain faithful."
"So would I," Bobby agreed.
Rachel smiled.
"Nothing could ever make me doubt His love."
Daniel looked towards the distant Throne.
"If I were born among mankind..."
"...I would choose God's ways every time."
One after another, they all agreed.
Their words were sincere.
Not proud.
Simply innocent.
They believed what they said.
None of them realised that none of them truly understood the weight carried by those living on Earth.
Unknown to the seven...
they were not alone.
From the shadowed edge of a distant heavenly boundary, unseen by every younger spirit, another kingdom watched.
Not with admiration.
With hatred.
The kingdom of darkness.
Far removed from the light of God's presence stood an immense black fortress carved into mountains that seemed to swallow every glimmer of hope.
Its halls echoed with fear.
Its inhabitants served only because they dared not refuse.
At its highest chamber sat Satan.
Once glorious.
Now utterly corrupted.
His cold eyes gazed upon the Earth.
Not because he loved it.
Because he coveted it.
A frog-eyed watcher emerged from the darkness and bowed low.
"My lord..."
"The seven have spoken."
Satan did not move.
"What did they say?"
The creature smiled wickedly.
"They believe they would never fail."
For several moments...
Silence.
Then Satan laughed.
It was not loud.
It was the quiet laughter of someone who believed he had already won.
"They have looked upon mankind..."
"...but they have never looked through human eyes."
He slowly rose from his throne and walked towards an enormous chamber hidden deep within his palace.
Only a handful of his oldest servants had ever entered it.
There, suspended in complete darkness, floated a mysterious black triangular stone.
Its surface seemed alive.
It absorbed light itself.
Dark spirits continually disappeared into it, only to emerge again moments later as though testing something yet unfinished.
One of the demons looked up.
"My lord..."
"The preparation continues."
Satan placed one hand upon the strange object.
"For centuries..."
"...we have whispered lies."
"We have offered mankind every explanation except the truth."
He smiled as the stone slowly rotated before him.
"Soon..."
"They will not merely reject their Creator."
"They will welcome their deceivers."
The frog-eyed demon grinned.
"And when the day comes?"
Satan's eyes remained fixed upon the black triangle.
"We shall not appear as demons."
His voice became almost a whisper.
"We shall come..."
"...as saviours from the stars."
Far above the darkness...
the seven spirit-beings continued laughing together beneath the everlasting light of Heaven.
They had no knowledge of the ancient plot unfolding below.
Nor did they realise...
that before long...
their own confidence would be tested in ways none of them could possibly imagine.
The lesson...
had already begun.
